Full course description
Course Overview
This short course offers a broad introduction to the subject of the advanced concepts of chemistry associated with recycle papermaking. This short course will be discussed to understand technology and solving the problems related to usage major chemical for recycling paper, understand what types of chemicals need to be used to remove the contaminants (inks and sticky materials) from recycling fibers, and what kind of chemicals will be added in the paper manufacturing process to production of recycle paper, understand the wet end chemistry related to recycle papermaking applications. This course is designed experienced engineers and technicians in the papermaking industries.
Learning Objectives
- Detailed features of the recycle papermaking technology and chemistry.
- Detailed discussion of aqueous chemistry for papermaking (hydrogen ion concentrations, hydrogen bonding, pH, acidity, alkalinity, hardness, solubility products, alum and aqueous aluminum chemistry, white water, and fines)
- Identifying the interfering substances and how to solve it.
- Impact of major chemicals that are used in the papermaking system (retention aid, strength additives, sizing agent, dyes, pigment, and fillers)
- Retention aid strategies to improve drainage and formation uniformity.
- Strength additive/chemical strategies to improve wet and dry strength.
- Wet end chemistry related to recycle papermaking process.
